4 Signs Your Child's Stomach Pain Is Serious

If you are the parent of a young child, you have probably heard him or her complain of a stomachache. Unfortunately, children sometimes use stomach pain as a way to get out of doing something, so sometimes the pain is nonexistent. However, there are plenty of other times when this complaint is not just valid but is also telling of a larger problem. Learn about some of the signs and symptoms that require a deeper look into your child's complaints.

1. High Fever

Stomach pain that accompanies a high fever is generally telling of an infection, such as a urinary tract infection. Infections that target the urinary and intestinal tracts can often cause inflammation around the abdominal area, which may cause the stomach pain your child is experiencing. Keep in mind that infections do not heal on their own; they must be treated. Make sure your child is seen by a healthcare professional.

2. Yellow or Green Vomit

If your child also vomits around the time of their complaint, look at the color of the fluid. Vomit generally resembles the color of whatever type of food you have eaten, and as the stomach is emptied, it will turn yellow or green. However, if the vomit starts off yellow or green and your child has eaten, it could be a sign of an intestinal issue.

3. Blood in Stool or Vomit

Never ignore pain that comes along with blood in your child's vomit or stool. Sometimes, blood in these fluids can be perfectly normal and are just the result of strain. However, they can also be an indication of something much more serious, such as bowel disease or an infection. Since you do not know the exact cause, it is best to allow a medical professional to complete a diagnosis.

4. Appearance Changes

Look at your child to see if you recognize any changes in their appearance as they complain about stomach pain. Some of the things to look for include hives, swelling, and skin discoloration. All of these changes could signal that your child is going through an allergic reaction, even if they are not complaining of shortness of breath. You need to seek medical treatment to have the reaction examined.

When it comes to caring for your child, always seek help when you are unsure. Even if you do not recognize these symptoms, if you are concerned about your child's health, you should visit a health care provider.
