Treating Illness And Wounds With Items You Can Buy At The Convenience Store

It's late at night and you have a headache or maybe you've skinned your knee after falling on the rough concrete or perhaps you cut yourself with a knife, and it's not bad enough to need stitches, but you definitely need to clean it out. In a perfect world, you would have basic medication and first aid supplies on hand to deal with these situations. But this is not the perfect world. Here's a look at how you can manage most urgent illnesses and injuries with items available at most convenience stores.

Treating headaches and other aches with ice or ice pops

Most headaches are due to inflammation. Maybe there's some inflammation in your neck due to tension, or perhaps there's inflammation in your sinuses due to illness. Simply holding some ice against your forehead or neck can, therefore, ease your headache away without the need for pain relievers. Most convenience stores sell ice. If your local convenience store does not sell ice, they probably sell ice pops. You can easily hold one of them against your head and neck and then eat it when it's partially melted.

Cleaning wounds with saline solution

Some convenience stores may sell iodine solution or hydrogen peroxide, both of which are good for rinsing out wounds. (Hydrogen peroxide will sting a little, but not too terribly.) But if your convenience store does not have these items, they probably at least have some saline solution, as it's a common necessity for people who wear contacts. You can use that to rinse your wounds out, too. The salt in the saline will help kill germs.

Wrapping wounds with masking tape and cotton material

Many convenience stores have bandaids, but if yours does not, look for a roll of masking tape. If you put a piece of cotton material (from an old, but clean T-shirt or rag) on your wound and then wrap it up with masking tape, this is a good enough way to protect it until you can buy regular bandaids the next day.

Treating heartburn with baking soda

Heartburn can keep you up at night. Antacids are a good fix, but if your convenience store does not have them, see if they have a box of baking soda. It will taste downright awful, but you can mix a teaspoon into some water and drink it. The alkaline baking soda will help neutralize stomach acid and manage your heartburn so you can get some sleep.

Most convenience stores carry everything you need to handle basic health issues as long as you're willing to get creative. For more information about convenience store inventories, reach out to professionals like those at Instant Inventory Service who provide inventories.
